teens, do you think that drugs/drinking are stupid or do you do them?

Salade Girl asked:

i personally believe there is nothing more stupid in the world than using a substance that is scientifically proven to be only bad for your body. drugs are addicting and in the case of hard drugs can ruin your life after just one try and everyone knows that weed is just a gateway drug. drinking is just a recipe for disaster, no one can make good choices while intoxicated and if you’re with a group of irresponsible, hormonal teenagers the choices you make are going to be extremely stupid and reckless.
what do you think?
jenny – no, i’ve never tried weed. weed contains carcinogenic chemicals (that means they are proven to cause cancer) long term use also causes short term memory loss, anxiety attacks, and other mental effects. i don’t want any of those things in my life. plus, it’s illegal.

and for coping with stress, try yoga. it’s legal and actually good for you.
kels – i TOTALLY get that all the time. not all teens are stupid and reckless!
merceders – thank you for that very well-thought out answer. i never claimed to be an expert on weed. even if it was the most healthy thing in the world, it is still illegal in the good old U S of A. depending on where you live and how many convictions you have you can even get put in prison for life. that is a fact you can’t dispute. i don’t claim to know everything about marijuana and it’s effects, but i KNOW people who started off smoking weed and moved up to harder drugs. props to you if you’re not going to do that. i know some people smoke it for religious reasons, but let’s be real, how many teenagers in america are smkoing it for religious reasons with their buddies?

and FYI, i don’t eat junk food…

I think it’s a stupid waste of time. My family is messed up because of drinking and drugs. I DO NOT want that in my life.

Jacob @ 10:32 am

drugs/drinking =bs and a whole lot fucked up teens

TAG @ 12:46 pm

I’m 16 and I was on Roids for a month but quit. (idk if that counts as a drug haha) but yea I disagree with smoking pot and etc.

I agree totally with you on that, but people just don’t get that they are loved or that their problems can actually be solved. Through God it is possible to solve any problem.

I believe that alcohol and illicit drugs are a staple within a healthy lifestyle.

I always ensure that my children recieve their recommended daily dose of vodka.

easy for you to say. but a lot of teens(myself included) use drinking/drugs as a means of coping with several forms of stress we experience from our friends, family, school, work, anything and everything. being a teenager is an extremely difficult time in life, it carries a lot of weight and several people find adjusting to be hard. with drugs and alcohol easily accessible, it’s no wonder why a lot of people do them.

and have you ever even tried weed? it hardly messes with your judgment skills at all, most people are fully-functional when high.

Nathalie Rodriguez @ 12:22 pm

i am 14 and honestly i grew up hearing this but not just that, i just think drugs are stupid but its funny cuz i wouldn’t mind trying. i mean just one. acid. other then that i think everything else is just BLEH
drinking, i drink.
not like 24/7 but occasionally for a party or holiday. just wine or madori’s
not whiskey or heavy things.
i do think drinking irresponsibally is a total no-no though. i would never drink and drive or drink with knowing someone i trust is theere with me. and i watch how much i drink i don’t want to get hung over and ****.

Mgallner @ 7:49 am

i think it’s stupid. It’s stupid for someone to do stuff that will only harm them. I have friends who think it’s cool, but i’m sure they have never done it. Its just because people say its “cool” so it invites everyone to do it.

November 24, 2010

Kels @ 1:23 pm

I’m a teenager, and I agree that drugs and drinking are stupid.

What are ALSO stupid, are those adults that think ALL teens are irresponsible and reckless! I’m a perfect example of a teen that makes good choices and doesn’t let peer pressure from other teens get to her. It’s because of them that mature teens like myself get a bad name, and I’m so sick of it!

I smoke weed because its harmless. And yes I think drugs and drinking are terrible…And your gonna die someday..why not have a blast waiting?

EDIT: s THC considered a carcinogen (cancer-causing) in humans? Not according to the two most esteemed agencies of relevance, the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC) and the U.S. National Toxicology Program (NTP). However, the same cannot be said for smoking marijuana, as the smoke from burning marijuana shares an array of dangerous and potentially carcinogenic chemicals with cigarette smoke. The DPA fumbles here, saying “there have been no reports of lung cancer related solely to marijuana,” subtly hinting that it’s even possible to determine causation for any cancer in the first place. It should be said that although the DPA’s information is generally more reliable than the DEA’s, it does contain its fair share of porous arguments. Thats why I vaporize my weed anyway..smoke is bad.

i think drugs are bad. but i dont agree that weed is a gateway drug. i had a period of experimentation & decided for myself that i didnt like it. i stopped & wont touch the stuff.

i do drink occasionally… but i’m 19. i didnt drink until my senior yr of high school & i RAREly do it. ive only got drunk once. i dont drink to get drunk at all. i only allow myself 1 – 2 drinks. my friends all agree never to drive after one sip of drinking & we wont ever let each other drink when we are feeling sad. i think by 17/18, ppl should be responsible enough to drink if they choose to. for the 3 yrs ive have drank, ive only done it about 25 times. and only 1 of those 25 i was drunk.

i love you @ 1:31 am

i drink and smoke bud sometimes, and ive done other drugs
are they dumb? yeaa i guess
do i care? as of right now….no. one cause it hasnt affected me i still have above a 4.0 in school and im fine. and two care im so young that in a way i feel like im just enjoying my teen years and i enjoy doing this so i continue to do it.
BUT i only do it sometimes…i only smoke budd when im with my bf or im with my girlfriends or close friends and i drink only when i play beer pong, stuff like that and if i go out with my bf.
it is stupid and reckless but so is every single teen in this world. simple

Teva @ 3:27 pm

I don’t think they’re stupid.

I agree that hard drugs are very very bad for you and shouldnt be used by anyone. That being said I smoke weed on a daily basis and I feel no need to go out and start snorting cocaine or shooting up heroin, and i never will. I only smoke weed, I dont drink very often because I find a marijuana high to be much more pleasant than being drunk, and its cheaper. :)

-and on a side note marijuana is FAR less dangerous than you probably see it, the government has just done a very good job of brainwashing everyone into thinking that. But again thats just my opinion…..

Brianna @ 4:52 am

I do not do any drugs. They are harmful to a person’s body. I will never drink or do drugs because I have seen with my own eyes what they can do to a person. I knew this one boy, he smoked weed. He was very smart and all that. After a while he stop doing his work, he could not even do simple math problems. So he just dropped out of school.

I so agree with you. Drugs and drinking are horrible for the bloodstream and brain, not to mention it ruins your complexion! I have been around people who smoke and drink, and I always tell them not to. I highly discourage it and support the D.A.R.E. program. I did it in 5th grade and have always said no to drugs.

Lolaaaaa! @ 11:19 am

I think drinking and possibly some drugs are good in moderation, when you’re the proper age. most teens don’t drink to taste the different tones in wine, or even because the taste at all – they drink to drink, and that’s not mature. As for drugs, some people usually for religious enlightenment, such as in mexico and some southern american countries, and you don’t see them high all day every day.

ⓜⓔ ⓡⓒ ⓔⓓ ⓔⓢ☜ @ 3:41 pm

You got quite a few things wrong. I won’t share my opinion because these questions annoy me after a while, especially when asked by someone who can’t even spell and use grammar properly, but you need to stop talking about weed like you know all about it. You clearly don’t.

*EDIT* Okay. I’m kind of annoyed now, so I will share my opinion.

Yes, I smoke weed. I have also been drunk a few times before but I dislike it and don’t like how it impairs me, so I don’t drink alcohol anymore.

Many people who never drink alcohol or smoke weed do many things that can higher one’s risk of getting cancer and other health problems. Including mental. Things such as junk foods, cellphones, microwaves, paint fumes, not getting enough exercise, not having a healthy diet, taking on too much and getting stressed, tanning, and so on and so on, all increase one’s risk of getting cancer or other health problems. Many, many things that the majority of people often don’t even realize.

Pretty much everything has a good side and a bad side. Yeah, inhaling smoke is obviously not good for your body. But some people who have medical problems, are very stressed out, or whatever can actually be helped by weed. It takes away stress for a while, and sometimes people need that.

Stress can have even more adverse and obvious effects than weed, and the negative side-effects come more quickly and are almost always more serious than the side-effects someone might get from smoking weed. Excess stress damages everybody who has it in some way or another. And I mean physically too. Not just mentally and emotionally.

Weed isn’t actually physically addictive. It can be mentally addictive, but so can a lot of things. People get food addictions, exercise addictions, internet addictions, and so on. Those addictions can be just as, and often more, dangerous and problematic than a mental addiction to marijuana.

Since when is weed a gateway drug? I smoke weed and I have never wanted to try any ******** drugs. I’m fine with just weed. I can see someone going on to shrooms or something, but it seems to me that most people I know who smoke weed aren’t interested in trying anything ********. And the few that do want to try other drugs are usually just interested in trying shrooms or acid. People that go on to ******** drugs usually do it because they have serious problems going on in their life, not because they smoked weed and felt like trying something else just for the heck of it.

I agree that alcohol definitely impairs people. Often to a dangerous level. Weed doesn’t impair people like alcohol does. When high, I can still think logically and I never do anything stupid, other than maybe eat too much junk food. When drunk, I am more okay with doing stupid things, and the thought of getting injured or in trouble doesn’t bother me much. I just say and do what I feel like. Weed is much different.

Like I said, I have done nothing stupid or dangerous while high. Many people in general, not just teenagers, make bad decisions while drunk, though. I’m not a fan of alcohol.

THC contains an enzyme that releases or does something to the carcinogens in smoke. I forget what it does. So yeah, I’ll admit it isn’t directly physically healthy for you when it comes to most things. But, as I said earlier, a lot of things are harmful. The key is moderation, being informed, and responsibility.

Junk food is bad for you but can make occasions more enjoyable and won’t give you any lasting negative side-effects if you don’t eat it constantly or in large amounts. I see weed in the same way. Alcohol too. So I don’t think weed or alcohol are bad, or that smoking weed or drinking alcohol is bad. You just have to be responsible about it and know what you’re getting into.

*EDIT* I forgot to add that the majority of people who acquire mental problems after smoking weed almost all acquired them after already having mental problems beforehand, and after being a heavy smoker of weed for years. It isn’t something that will happen to someone who smokes weed once every week or two for a couple years as a teenager. Talk to the people that got schizophrenia (I’m using this as an example because this is the mental illness most people seem to associate with marijuana use) after smoking weed and you will find that what I said is most likely true for most of them. Most of them had diagnosed psychosis, or at least signs of psychosis, before they ever smoked weed. And most of them were heavy smokers. The weed, for many of them, is just what triggered the schizophrenia, not what caused the mental health problems to begin in the first place.

I read an article in a provincial newspaper a day or two ago, saying that there are twice as many people with mental illnesses among weed smokers than in that of the general population. That might seem like a sign to you that what you think is true, but it makes perfect sense to me. There are two main reasons people smoke weed. The first reason is because they want to have fun. The second is because they want to get away from their problems for a while. Mental illnesses are much more common than many people think, and cause very large problems and a lot of unhappiness for many people who have a mental illness. The use of alcohol and drugs among people with mental illnesses is also very common. So it makes total sense to me that there are twice as many people who smoke weed that have mental illnesses than people who don’t.

*EDIT* Are you going to comment on my answer? I want to know what you think about what I have written.

*EDIT* When you said that it causes anxiety attacks and short-term memory loss, you misunderstood. That happens while you are high, not after. Short-term memory loss is guaranteed while high. That’s just part of being high. But it goes away right after the weed wears off. As for anxiety attacks, sometimes people get a bit paranoid while high on weed. It is uncommon for someone to get so scared they have an anxiety attack, though. And when that does happen, I bet most of the people it happens to are smoking weed for the first time and are scared by how it feels.

*EDIT* That is a “fact” I actually can dispute. In most places you won’t get sent to jail just for getting caught smoking weed. In many places you won’t even get charged with anything. You might just get a warning. The serious crimes are crimes such as dealing weed, being in possession of a certain amount of weed (an amount that pretty much no one would be carrying on them other than someone transporting or dealing weed), and so on. Mainly speaking about within the US and Canada, smoking weed is not considered a major offense in most places, if any. It is just taken more seriously in some places compared to others.

Where I live the police and public in general seem pretty lax about people just smoking weed. I understand that it is considered a more serious offense in other places, but that still doesn’t mean you can get sent to jail just for being in possession of a small amount of marijuana and some rolling papers. Being in possession of other drug paraphernalia, such as bongs and pipes that have been used for smoking marijuana can sometimes get you into a little trouble. Still not something you would get sentenced to life for, though. Again, that is something many police officers would not even bother charging someone with. They might just confiscate the items, and if the person is underage, call their parent(s) or whoever takes care of them.

*EDIT* Why should it matter whether someone does something for religious reasons or not? They’re still doing it for personal reasons and of their own choice.

And of course there are people who smoke weed and then go on to ******** drugs later. ******** drugs exist, so people will take them. But that is their own choice. It isn’t something weed made them do. That is like blaming comfortable chairs and junk food for people being fat and unhealthy.

I drink and I smoke weed. It’s my life, and I don’t really care about your opinion on them.
I know plenty of people that only smoke weed, or only smoked weed, and never did any other drugs. It’s not a gateway drug for everyone. I can already tell you’re pretty one sided about this and not open to hearing anybody else opinions, so I’m just going to leave it at this, but you seriously need to do some more research on marijuana.

davo @ 12:16 am

I think for teenagers, they should avoid them and stop trying to live out a whole life time of experiences all at once. As for when you get older and have grown wiser, considering all aspects of life, I think it doesn’t hurt to change your state of mind recreationally.
When older you are more likely to be able to control your intake aswell as behaviour a hell of a lot better than when younger. More people die from cigarettes or alcohol than most illegal drugs and that’s a fact. Yet they’re legal.
But I suggest you wait until you’re in your at least in your mid twenties before you consider messing with most substances. You would have a hell of a lot more “life” experience and would know your true self. I feel you would also make a better parent if you know what your children are doing from first hand experience. As the saying say’s -you shouldn’t knock it til you try it.

I think it’s stupid to drink or do drugs without thinking it through, for the sole purpose of getting drunk or high, especially when what you’re doing is illegal (either you’re underage or the substance is illegal).
But it’s certainly possible for mature adults to use alcohol responsibly. There’s a huge difference between having a glass of wine with dinner (red wine even has some health benefits) and being a teenager who goes out and gets drunk all the time, or being an alcoholic/drug addict and ruining your life and career.
Drugs can save lifes, but they can also destroy them. We need to be very careful. Like on Spiderman, “With great power comes great responsibility.”

well let me start by saying that i have had about 5mg of valium tonight i also like vicodin oxycodone and i think i am going to have a xanax before class tomorrow but i have never liked weed and the only way it is a gateway drug is because its illegal and you have to go to drug dealers to get it if you could just go to a liqour store you would not be temped with any thing else

Lucid Dreaming @ 5:33 am

many major studies have been done into weed being a gateway drug. Only one study remotely suggested that weed was a gateway drug. Weed also has many spiritual uses as well assisting mediation and enhancing creativity. its opens the mind and deepen the consciousness. Weed itself does not contain cancer causing chemicals but its smoke does as well as every over smoke. The are many unharmful ways to take weed other than smoking it so all harm can be negated. Alcohol is horrible and cannot help anything but close the mind. Legality is not an issue for those whi want to explore their being.

Drugs like Meth and coke are some of mans worst inventions. LSD in irregular use has no harmful effects unless their is a preexisting mental conditions. It is wonderful when used properly
“They invented LSD to control people and what they did was give us freedom. Sometimes it works in mysterious ways its wonders to perform.”-John lennon
People abuse drugs like weed and do not use it for any other reason than to get wasted which is not good. Funnily enough many of buddhist and hindu sect use marijuana to increase the benefits of

and if I’m causin no harm,

You know the **** they tell you in health class is bullshit. Because some teenagers just cant handle alcohol and drugs. I like alcohol and drugs, I think they are great. I think being reckless and youthful is great. I like testing things and making mistakes, but never regretting. You don’t go out and get black out trashed and be an idiot. Thats stupid. You dont go skip school to smoke dope all the time, that’s stupid. You drink with good friends, for good times, and good memories. You smoke dope when you feel like being high, because its nice. You don’t abuse it. You know when to stop. I’ve been doin it like this for quite some time. Yeah, I’ve been black out drunk once, i’ve been so stoned I couldn’t find things that were right in front of me, but I wasn’t at some raging party being dumb, I was with good friends in a safe house. Some teenagers just treat it like it’s some huge deal, it’s not. It’s just something to do that creates nice memories of your youth. It’s an embodiment of being aimless and youthful and a teenager.

I drink. I’ve gotten drunk. I’ve never done anything stupid and I remember everything the next day. I never get a hangover either.

I smoke cigarettes and I occasionally smoke weed. Cancer doesn’t bother me. The way my body is deteriorating now, I just want to experience stuff before I’m practically paralysed. The state of my health has nothing to do with my drinking/smoking before you ask. My health was declining before I even thought about it.
